NAIFA–South Dakota honors the life and legacy of Sandra “Sandy” Kost, a loyal member, educator, and advocate for the insurance and financial services profession, who passed away on April 26, 2026.
Sandy was more than a member—she was a builder of people. Through her work as the founder of 1st Dakota Insurance School, she played a pivotal role in shaping generations of agents and advisors across South Dakota. Her commitment to education elevated professional standards and helped countless individuals enter and grow within the industry. Many who serve clients across our state today do so on a foundation Sandy helped create.
Her career reflected both leadership and conviction. From early roles in banking and insurance to serving as a regional manager across six states, Sandy ultimately chose entrepreneurship—not simply to build a business, but to create flexibility for her family while continuing to invest in others. That decision speaks to the values she carried throughout her life: dedication, independence, and a deep sense of purpose.
Beyond her professional contributions, Sandy was known for her energy, warmth, and ability to connect. A Sioux Falls native, she lived fully—whether traveling, attending concerts, supporting her community, or cheering on her family. She gave generously of her time through organizations such as Junior Achievement, CASA, and Call to Freedom, always focused on lifting others.
To NAIFA–South Dakota, Sandy leaves a lasting legacy of service, mentorship, and commitment to excellence in our profession. To her family—her husband Todd, sons Chandler and Austin, and her beloved grandchildren—she leaves a legacy far greater: one of love, strength, and presence.
She will be deeply missed, and her impact will continue to be felt in the lives and careers of those she influenced.
In honoring Sandy’s life, her family invites those who feel moved to continue her legacy of giving. Memorial gifts will be used to support families navigating the challenges of a loved one’s cancer diagnosis—an effort that reflects the compassion and generosity that defined Sandy’s life.
